Advent “Penance”: Christmas Preparation

Dear Holy Spirit parishioner,

The peace of Christ be with you.

The focus of the liturgical season of Advent is “Joyful expectation”.  I am old enough to remember when Advent had a more penitential emphasis.  Advent was to Christ what Lent is to Easter.  Advent is four weeks.  Lent is six weeks.  During both seasons the liturgical color is purple/violet which is a penitential color that calls us to prayer, fasting, almsgiving and other penitential practices in reparation of our sins.  The exceptions are the third Sunday of Advent and fourth Sunday of Lent, when we are allowed to wear rose colored vestments.  But, the rose color is intended to be a break from the purple and a sign that the penitential season is more than half over.  The goal of Advent is to give us four weeks to prepare for the great solemnity of the Incarnation, the Son of God coming in the flesh on the first Christmas.

In recent years the Church asks us to accent the positive in Advent by making it a season of “joyful expectation” as we prepare for Christmas.  But, the predominant color is still purple/violet because there is still a penitential aspect to Advent.  Each on of us must determine our own Advent penances. Prayer, fasting/abstinence, almsgiving (angel tree, etc.) are basic biblical penances.

I suggest a common penance for all of us as a parish for this Advent.  I suggest that each one of us ARRIVE AT SUNDAY MASS BEFORE MASS BEGINS, STAY FOR THE ENTIRE MASS, AND REMAIN AFTER MASS in the vestibule, gallery or parking lot to speak to our fellow parishioners.  Those of us who consistently come to Mass late, and those of us who consistently leave Mass early can seriously consider this as your Advent penance.  Also, some who leave Mass early treat the    reception of Holy Communion as a “drive through” and walk out of church immediately upon receiving Holy Communion.  Unless you are leaving for an emergency this is an irreverent practice that should stop.  And upon reflection, wouldn’t we all admit that coming to Mass on time and staying for the entire Mass shouldn’t be regarded as a penance, it should be regarded as standard Catholic practice.

May God bless each of us with a grace-filled Advent season!

Gratefully in Christ,

Fr. Charles Troncale, Pastor
