Parish Penance Service

Tonight, Thursday, December 17th, 6:30pm

There will be 5 priests available for Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation - Penance:

This sacrament involves sincere sorrow for violating one’s intimate friendship with God, and desire to be reconciled with God and the faith community.  Confession of sins is made to an ordained priest, who grants absolution (assurance of God’s forgiveness).  The penitent must then make satisfaction for his or her sins (such as through prayer, an offering, works of mercy or patient acceptance of a burden).

Get In The Giving Spirit And Pay Less In Taxes

By Van Sievers CFP®

Since the holidays are the time for giving, you can add your name to your tax gift list by donating to Holy Spirit Church. As long as you itemize, you can deduct gifts of cash or other assets to help reduce your tax    liability.

Another nice thing about giving to charities, aside from the satisfaction you get from helping others, is that unlike medical and miscellaneous deductions, your contributions don't have to meet a percentage threshold. Your entire contribution can help your tax situation as well as benefiting the recipient’s needs.

What if you don’t have a lot of extra cash in your bank account? Consider donating stock that's appreciated in value, but no longer fits your investing plan. Instead of selling it, give it to our Church, which can then sell the stock without any tax consequences and use the money for our projects.

On your taxes, you will sidestep capital gains taxes plus be able to deduct the asset's market value at the time you made the gift. Just make sure the donated stock is one you've owned for more than a year and that it has gained value while you owned it. It doesn't do you any good to give away a stock that's lost value since you can't deduct that loss.

Also, check with your CPA or financial planner to make sure these strategies will work effectively for your particular circumstances, and complete your gifts by the end of the year.

Finally, our Church has established a “Planned Giving” Committee to assist parishioners interested in creative gifts to Holy Spirit. You can contact the Finance  Council for more information.
